Crowns & Bridges

When choosing a dentist, you are also choosing his technicians who will be making your crowns, veneers etc. At Watlington Dental Centre we will carry out the treatment to the very best of standards but it is the technician who makes the crowns, bridges, veneers and dentures.

We use the best local dental laboratories. We work closely with dental technicians to achieve the best cosmetic and functional result and we will arrange for you to meet the technicians to discuss the shade and shape of the restoration where cosmetic cases are concerned.

Dental crowns are restorations that protect broken down teeth. A crown strengthens your damaged tooth and restores it functionality.

A Bridge is a restoration that replaces a missing tooth or several teeth by joining an artificial tooth permanently to adjacent teeth or dental implants.

Crowns/Bridges can be gold, porcelain bonded to gold or ceramic. Ceramic crowns/Bridges have the advantage of the best aesthetics. Your dentist will always go through which will best suit you.

The tooth is first built up with a strong foundation (Core) which will ensure the crown is retained well. Cores differ according to how much natural tooth is present. They may either take the form of a large bonded ‘filling’ retained by adhesive techniques, or a glass-fibre post or laboratory-made cast post that is cemented into the prepared tooth. Posts are used with teeth that have been root filled.

The tooth is then prepared for the crown. Impressions are taken and a temporary crown is fitted in place.

The impressions are sent to the dental laboratory who will construct the final crown. At your next appointment, the temporary crown is removed and your laboratory made permanent crown is bonded in place.
